For The Love Of The Game

C'mon, Blue!

Worst Call Ever

Sorry, Armando.

Custom Authentic Jerseys / Sorry, Armando.

You really have to feel bad for everyone involved in this game, from the players who aided in the perfect game bid to the Detroit organization that would have had its first perfect game on the books, but most of all for Armando Galarraga. Even though he still might get his perfect game in the record books, he won't ever be able to feel that once-in-a-lifetime elation that comes with the celebration after throwing a perfect game.

I'll give Jim Joyce some credit for expressing his remorse and personally and publicly apologizing for his egregious mistake to Galarrage, but honestly, what the hellwas he thinking? With two outs in the ninth, on a routine ground ball, that didn't even look close when it occured, some part of him must have been thinking (at least subconsciously), "I want to do something dramatic and end this perfect game bid." If you're not absolutely sure of the call in that situation, why would you ever call the runner safe? It would, in all likelihood, do absolutely nothing to change the result of the game, which was 3-0 at the time in favor of Detroit. Technically, the tie goes to the runner, but at some point, common sense has to kick in and override that rule, especially when it wasn't even close to a tie.

Baseball is already almost as slow as golf, which is ridiculous because one sport involes running while the other involves wearing collared shirts and having someone carry your equipment during the course of the game; so why not expand the use of instant replay? Don't make the umpires walk into the clubhouse or dugout to check on a call, just have an extra official up in the booth that makes those calls like stolen bases, plays at the plate, plays at first, and fair/foul determinations. The guilty umpire, Jim Joyce, has been adamant that he was wrong, which required considerable courage and integrity on his part. Now, Bud Selig needs to show the same fortitude and attempt to rectify this egregious wrongdoing. If he doesn't, he's worse than the umpire and I'm going to write another article, also called "Worst Call Ever," but about Selig.

Sports are there for us when talking about the weather just won't cut it. Whenever we need to kickstart a conversation or end an awkward silence, "HOW BOUT DEM COWBOYS?!" always trumps "Nice day out there, huh?" Sports aren’t a perfect reflecting pool for life, and life isn’t all about sports. But, at the margins, they help sustain each other.

Whether it’s Monday Night Football at the beginning of every week or daytime baseball at the end, we know that our sports keep on trucking. And somehow, despite it all, so do we.

For the love of the game.
