The first exhibition of his work in the United States begins on March 16th, 2011 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, featuring over 80 different works. Pieces range from his original sketches to his famous sculpture-dresses. Along with nature, his work is highly praised for its architectural style, such as in his "Arancia" (orange) because of his use of cuts, line, fold, and construction. The exhibit includes his piece based on classical Doric architectural columns, his "Colonna" silhouette.

With that Times article about how 20-somethings are taking longer to grow up, it makes complete sense that a term must be coined for this new sociological evolution.  And how fitting is it that the term would be shared on a blog, the communication vehicle of that generation?

]]> 2010-12-16T15:33:49+00:00 Going Through the Motions: The xx http://dartmouthindependent.com/knot/going_through_the_motions_islands_by_the_xx_39101216 http://dartmouthindependent.com/knot/going_through_the_motions_islands_by_the_xx_39101216 Strikingly sharp, Saam Farahmand's "Islands" by The xx takes a couple of views to expose its subtleties.  While the London trio sings apathetically on a couch (to be expected), repeated choreography can be likened to the repetitions of relationships and their demises.  Slight changes in action throw the momentum off, eventually causing derailment. 

The ordered binaries in this video, black and white, action and stillness, men and women, highlights the non-duality in the evolving choreography, androgeny of The xx and ultimately unique forms that relationships take on. 

While I find the use of the "x" in the decor slightly contrived, I don't mind it because the song is even more hauntingly beautiful combined with the chic costumes and confusingly energetic choreography.
