Who Cares?

When this article first ran in March 2007, it pitted the enthusiastic '10 against the indifferent '07. Now that the '10s are seniors, we've come full circle. This crossfire's timelessness speaks for itself.

I Care
By Julie McGillicuddy '13
Hi! I'm Julie—trip E-42 Intermediate Hiking. It's only my second term at Dartmouth, but I love it so much already! It was hard for me to get into Dartmouth. And I admit, between captaining my high school's equestrian and debate teams, being Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, and nightly tutoring for my AP exams, I really didn't have much of a life. But I totally do here, and it's SO much fun! I'm in SA—I won the Fayer Cluster Rep by the biggest margin ever—and I feel like I've been able to do so much to help Dartmouth. So far, I've been working mostly on the Dartmoose and the Big Green Bike Program, and I honestly believe that my Fayer constituency truly appreciates my efforts.
I also joined an a cappella group, which is so cool because I can meet so many people and go out to frats on Wednesdays without even drinking. I love the group, and I'm so glad I joined. I got into the best girls' group on campus, but instead I decided to join one that needed a bit more work. That way, I can really pour my effort into improving the group and make it the best here. We've got a ton of fresh talent, and I can tell that when I'm a senior it will be such a rewarding experience.
Besides that, I just do the normal philanthropy work that all Dartmouth students do because, you know, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Right now I'm working on a project to reroute the winter migration of White-eyed Vireo to avoid that nasty hole in ozone layer. The species is in some serious trouble, and I just think that we Dartmouth students are so lucky to be here that we've got to help.
Anyway, I'm so glad it will get warm soon. I can't wait until it's spring and I'll be able study and hang out on the Green between class and afternoon meetings. Plus, EVERYONE walks by the Green, so I get to see my friends all the time. These seniors just taught me about this thing "Facetime," where you need to be in the right places so you know that you'll see the right people, and it's totally true. Seriously, the more that people see you, the more they'll like you! Plus, once it gets sunny I get to show off my spring clothes. I try to wear a piece of Dartmouth clothing pretty much everyday, because I think that the school would be so much better if everyone would just show how much they love it. But I'm getting tired of having to wear my Dartmouth sweatshirt all the time. Actually, I always change before SA meetings on Tuesday nights. I really want to look nice so I can catch the eye of the guys in charge of SA. They're so great, plus they have so much power around campus. People really respect them.
This morning I heard the most wonderful thing. I was talking to Sheila, the woman who makes omelets in the mornings at Collis. I always get breakfast at Collis—I just can't function without my breakfast. Plus, I make sure to get there as soon as it opens to say "Hi" to Sheila. We're really good friends now, and I know it makes her day to see me. Anyway, I was really upset because I'm not positive I'm going to get that internship in the pediatric clinic. Shelia told me that I can do anything I want, and that really cheered me up. I know that after I graduate, I probably want to be a doctor, but maybe I don't, you know? It was nice to be reminded that, either way, coming out of Dartmouth I'll be able to succeed at what I want to do. I'll have so many choices and so many opportunities to thrive. Isn't that what life is all about?

I Don't Care
By "Rooster" Fitzsimmons '10
I woke up this morning with a melted Snickers stuck to my forehead. How the hell did it get there? I was going to eat that. Anyway, I had to go to Food Court for breakfast. I barely made it before it shut down—closing between 3pm and 5pm is ridiculous, you know? I'm trying to be healthy now after my 23 day EBA's binge of buffalo chicken pizza. At least I tried to switch between blue cheese and ranch sides for variety. But I wanted pizza.
So at the grill line I go, "Yo man, two slices of Hawaiian please."
He goes, "Look, there's no pizza."
Last time I checked we didn't pay these dudes to be smartasses. Yeah, so I got in the sandwich line cause sandwiches are healthy and the line was mad short. I think I ordered a Windy City—some alum who played pong with me until daybreak last weekend had told me it was dope. But the sandwich she-daemon put a load of nasty green peppers and some weird sauce on my sandwich, so I left. Maybe Larry eats that grim stockpiling of lard you call a sandwich, but I won't. Luckily I have the microwave that I stole from the Bissell lounge in my room. So I bought Instant Lunch and Pizza Flavored-Blasted Goldfish from Topside. Pizza croutons are the best.
Outside my feet were freezing, but I'm not going to wear anything but Reefs because that's how I roll. And I don't have any clean socks. I hate laundry. I can NEVER remember which day to put my laundry service bag outside my room. I think it's Thursdays, but I'm pretty sure Thursday is actually just the day I have lab. I'll worry about that later.
Today was Tuesday, my shower day. My ex-girlfriend made me shower and it just stuck I guess, but I don't get it. What a waste. I don't even have soap. After I jammed my lunch and was about to hop in the shower, I remembered that I had an important 2A. I don't really know what happened to my backpack (maybe I never had one?) so I just grabbed my folder and bolted out the door. I barely made it before it ended. Thankfully I got my withdrawal card in on time. I just don't know how people take so many classes in a term! Anyway, I'm actually going to go to my two classes tomorrow. See, I just got a new PSP, and since I have x-hours in both courses next week, I might be able to beat Mortal Kombat in class before the term ends.
A lot of my friends are talking about what they're doing after college and I respect that but it's overwhelming. All I know is I'm going to buy a bigass piece of wood so I can make a pong table for my apartment. If I make it sturdy enough, I can just throw my futon mattress on it and use it as a bed. That way I also don't have to drunkenly stumble all the way from the table to my bed (cause it is my bed, dude). Given the amount of time I've put into developing my pong game, there's really no reason to let my skills go to waste after my education. A lot of my friends think it's stupid, but I don't care. People need to relax, hang out, and be more like me.
Note: "I Care" was actually written by Michael Murov. "I Don't Care" was written by Nicolas Baum. The photo for the latter was taken by Andrew Ratto.
