In the spring of 2007--months prior to Dartmouth's hair installation, the author traveled to China to film a documentary about the artist, Wenda Gu, and the Shanghai art scene. Initially completely sold on the legitimacy of Gu's project, the author soon found a string of unexpected discoveries that left him increasingly dismayed and confused. Four months in the making, this article tells the secret story of Wenda Gu and how the Dartmouth project came into being.
