In the spring of 2007--months prior to Dartmouth's hair installation, the author traveled to China to film a documentary about the artist, Wenda Gu, and the Shanghai art scene. Initially completely sold on the legitimacy of Gu's project, the author soon found a string of unexpected discoveries that left him increasingly dismayed and confused.
